Albuquerque, NM -- Public Library -- September 5, 2007

Here's a photo taken at the launch event for The Big Read, which I missed, but Riann Powell, the Cultural Activities Coordinator (her picture below), emailed me the photo and the following description:

The picture is of the manager of Bernalillo County's West Side Community Center reading out loud from Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima. She was reading a passage from the first chapter of the book. The event took place at the Rio Bravo Park in Albuquerque's South Valley.
This event was the kick-off celebration for The Big Read, which our Library System, in conjunction with Bernalillo County and the National Hispanic Cultural Center, is participating in during the month of September. Throughout the month, local libraries, community centers, book stores and other organizations are hosting a series of 25 events pertaining to the book. These events include theatrical groups performing their interpretation of a particular section of the book, storytellers reading from the book in both Spanish and English, lectures and discussions about the book and the author, etc.
