Reading Volume I of Three Kingdoms, by Luo Guanzhong, translated by Moss Roberts. It’s a Chinese story about a kingdom, politics, and the war. He got it from his brother.
When I came into the shop he put the book away quickly, with sort of a jolt of adrenaline, like it’s illegal to read, and didn't quite know how to respond when I told him I didn't even want a pretzel, I just wanted to take his photo reading.
